Marie

Marie Williams is an artist and writer based in Queensland, Australia. Her first book, Green Vanilla Tea, was awarded The Finch Memoir Prize 2013.

Marie, also known as Gela-Marie, spent much of her career as a social worker (MSW) before swapping clipboards for paintbrushes and writer’s notebooks. She practiced in health settings, the not-for-profit sector, clinical education and private practice. It was important work and a privilege to be invited into the intimate spaces of peoples’ lives. Those years of listening continue to shape the questions she asks as an artist and a writer. 

Marie grew up in South Africa and has lived in America and Canada. She has now settled in the semi-rural outskirts of Brisbane.
